Why We Rated This on for Ages 11 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

Any teen standing up for herself via terrific song lyrics sends a good, strong message, though titles like "I'm Only Me When I'm With You" may evoke a parental sigh.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

Some very mild innuendo of the "it was a moment of weakness and you said yes" variety.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

A passing mention of a beer or two; not much to worry about.

What Parents Need to Know

About Taylor Swift

Parents need to know that Taylor Swift, a teen country sensation, writes from the heart about subjects of interest to other tweens and teens -- mostly the tricky business of negotiating relationships when you don't have a lot of experience and can't help wearing your heart on your sleeve. The lyrics and messages are fine for kids to hear.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the song "Teardrops on My Guitar," about a girl's unrequited crush on a guy who loves someone else (raise your hand if you've never been there!). What would you do if you were the one with the crush? Also, "Should've Said No" draws a hard line with a boyfriend caught cheating. Do you think dumping the guy is appropriate, or might there be some room for explanation and even forgiveness?

Awesome, Fun Album Belongs on Everyone's Playlist!

It's great for all ages! Nothing bad here! This is probably my favorite album from her, really.

  3. I rate this title on for age 2 and give it 1.0

Her pseudo-deep music is so obnoxious it gives me a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. Her lyrics are awful, she's not a talented instrumentalist, and on top of all that, she can't sing her way out of a paper bag. The only reason anyone even knows who this girl is, is because the Disney Channel decided her face was marketable and said, "With the help of a little creative voice mixing, THIS is our it girl." All hype and no talent. There's nothing really objectionable about it except it's unbelievable lack of substance.
