What parents need to know

Parents need to know that gender stereotyping goes wild in this assortment of loosely connected songs. Yes, little boys and girls are different and have different interests, but the same can be said within the sexes, too.

  • There are no examples of misbehavior, but some might take issue with the generalizations about what little boys are made of.
  • None.
  • None.

What's the story?

Like its companion CD (That's What Little Girls Are Made Of !), THAT'S WHAT LITTLE BOYS ARE MADE OF! collapses under the weight of its producers' assumptions. They seem to assume that little boys are made of John Deere tractors, locomotive engines, dinosaur pajamas, and 18-wheel big rigs. And they assume that little boys and their parents want to hear a collection of songs solely on subjects like fishing holes, baseball games, and the open range.

Is it any good?

The CD delivers an uneven assortment of songs delivered with varying levels of competence. There are definitely some pleasing tracks, like Raffi's mellow version of "Take Me Out To the Ballgame," or Livingston Taylor's gentle "Pajamas." But these are mixed up with puzzling choices like "I'm A Singin' Pirate" and Allan Sherman's old chestnut, "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh!"
