The good stuff

  • Messages:

Positive messages about being a hard worker, a loyal friend, and good sportsmanship are all on the album. The song "Sir Topham Hatt" does detail "the Fat Controller's" familiar weight issues: "Some people say he's stout/rather rotund/really quite round."

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

    Not an issue.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

As parents probably know, besides the Thomas series of books, there's also a TV show and large line of toys associated with the characters.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About Thomas' Songs and Roundhouse Rhythms

Parents need to know that if their kids are fans of the Thomas the Tank Engine franchise or trains in general, they'll probably enjoy this CD. But make sure you don't already have these songs, as this is a reissue of previously released material. Also, the song, "Accidents Will Happen" includes some lyrics that might be a little advanced for preschoolers: "Accidents happen now and again/just when you least expect/just when you think life is OK/fate comes to collect." The other songs talk about positive messages such as being a good friend and a hard worker.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about some of the meanings of the songs. "He's a Really Useful Engine" discusses the idea of being needed. What do you do to help your family? Does it feel good to have a job that people count on you to do? Another song, "Let's Have a Race" is about Thomas and Bertie being good sports about winning and losing. When you play a game or have a race, do you enjoy it whether you win or lose? Is it fun to be a good sport?

We can't get the Toby song out of our heads!

We bought this CD at "Day Out With Thomas" when my son was 22 months. He's now almost 3 and he still loves it! Warning: the Toby song is way too catchy!
