What Parents Need to Know

This review of Too Young To Fight It was written by Jessica Dawson

Parents need to know that this album, although streaming from the popular indie rock genre that can often be angst-filled or gloomily defiant, is layered with upbeat kid-friendly lyrics. You'll recognize this MTV band and its wide array of musical mixes and discotheque delicacies over your local Hollister's speakers while your kids are trying on $80 jeans with holes in them.

Families Can Talk About

  • Families can talk about the lyrics in the song "Nameless One": "Cast your fears away/save your worries for another day." What do these lyrics mean to you? How can you "cast your fears away" without being reckless and irresponsible? When is it OK to live this way, and when, if at all, is it inappropriate?

More on Too Young To Fight It

What’s the Story?

TOO YOUNG TO FIGHT IT is Young Love's first album, and a debut that's sure to find its spot on iPods across the country. Its pop lyrics are mostly light and playful, while the music itself is a feast for the ears. Half the album is about nightlife, the other half about love. In the song "Take It or Leave It" there's an abstract illusion to drugs with the lyrics: "Every time I try to get high/you try to bring me down/wonder who I'm out with when you're not around." In "Underneath the Night Sky," someone is killed on the street, but the song is not violent in nature. It's about seizing the moment and appreciating it ("Don't forget to hold onto life/everything can change so fast").

Is It Any Good?

Dan Keyes, the young mastermind behind the band, has created a fresh, funky sound that is at times reminiscent of David Bowie, with other tracks beckoning slightly to the influences of The Cure and Radiohead. The entire album is one to shake, dance, and sing to; the best thing is that it doesn't rely on despondent lyrics or vulgar language to give it an edge. Overall, Too Young to Fight It is too good to pass up.
