What’s the Story?

Reviewed by Galia Baron

With TOOT TOOT, the energetic Wiggles offer a playful tunes that will quickly get kids' attention -- and get 'em on their feet. The best-known tune is the popular "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes," which receives a friendly treatment from the singers. Most tunes, however, are original creations. In "Dorothy the Dinosaur (Tell Me Who Is That Knocking)," listeners are introduced to the green dinosaur, her three imaginary friends, and the four charming humans who invented them. Later, kids hear a story about Captain Feathersword -- and get to dance like an octopus. Other songs teach kids how to cross the street, and encourage young listeners to count from one to ten, quack, dance, skip, sing, and -- of course -- wiggle. Two cheery instrumental tracks close the collection.

The contemporary tunes of this delicious Wiggles collection are tailored to entertain and teach basic skills to preschoolers. Extremely simple lyrics, repetitive verses, short catchy tunes, and vivid character voices encourage children to listen and follow instructions. The interactive approach is exercised skillfully on many tracks: In "Balla Balla" the singers explain the Italian lyrics and invite listeners to dance, while in other songs kids are urged to count, sing, skip certain words, and move certain body parts.
