What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this collection of popular children's songs sung in English and French makes learning a second language an engaging experience. Children who repeatedly listen to the songs will learn words and phrases in French quickly and effortlessly. Parents can help by reading the French lyrics in the liner notes.

What's the story?

This bilingual CD opens with one of the best-known French children's songs, "Frere Jacques," after a short introduction in which an English-speaking child is trying to wake up his sleepyhead brother John. Adult singers and an active children's chorus alternate between English and French throughout the CD, smoothly weaving the two languages together. After each song, the children translate the French words that appeared in the song into English. The collection includes many English favorites and such French classics as "Alouette" and "Au Clair de la Lune." Unobtrusive sound effects and animal sounds in the background add color and depth to the already satisfying musical arrangements.

Is it any good?

Children love to sing; they have an inborn capacity to respond to musical sounds and to develop a variety of skills while engaging in musical activities. UNI VERSE OF SONGS: French successfully addresses these capabilities in a bilingual sing-along, but even kids who've never heard a word of French will enjoy this collection.
