Common Sense Note
Parents need to know that the 15 tracks on this kid's "rock" CD contain nothing offensive, but very little that's all that thought-provoking. Though many of the songs were written by Derryberry (the voice for Jimmy Neutron, among other characters), the topics are well-worn kid's music terrain (how great ice cream is and how freckles are special). Still, the tunes are upbeat, and her style is ultra-positive -- both great for trips in the car or during playtime.
Families can talk about some of the CD's themes. "The Tonsil Song" -- a positive tune about getting those pesky tonsils out -- seems like it was written especially for a kid who was nervous about the procedure and the whole hospital experience. "Swingin' on a Star" promises you can always be "better than you are." What are some things you can do to make yourself a better person?

It's hard to be critical of this fun, slightly gooey kid's pop album because the artist's energy is obviously fully in it. If Derryberry's voice sounds familiar, it's because she's not only the voice for Jimmy Neutron, but for dozens of other animated characters your kids probably already love. She's also an animal rights activist, a sometime actor, and former guitarist in a popular Los Angeles girl band called Honey Pig. She's also mom to a 5 year old and her comfort level with kids really does shine through in these songs -- her ebullient energy and squeaky voice make her sound like a really perky preschool teacher. And in this case, it's not such a bad thing.
Families who like this CD should check out Debi's first album What a Way to Play or Mustard Pancakes by Courtney Campbell.
