What’s the Story?

For very young children only, this first compilation of YO GABBA GABBA songs might be harder to love if you're not already a fan of the popular Nickelodeon TV show. The CD's 13 very simple songs each address one specific concept or moment in preschool life. Titles like "Party in My Tummy," "Get the Sillies Out," and "Pool Party" feature repetitive lyrics and synthesized instrumental tracks.

Is It Any Good?

Though the songs are fun and sometimes even funny, they don't display a level of musicianship or humor that will appeal to the whole family. The synthesized tracks seem carelessly mixed, the repetitive arrangements may be hard for parents to love, and the overall ethos seems to be that since toddlers won't know the difference, why bother delivering irony or wit anyway?

That said, there are a couple of highlights: "Hey, Won't Somebody Come Out and Play," performed by The Little Ones, features nice harmonies and a hook-filled melody. And "Happy Birthday" delivers an excellent performance by the Ting Tings. The songs are short, lively, and energetic -- definitely not for nap time!
