Parents need to know that this CD is a reissue of a 1998 album and is basically the original soundtrack to the BBC TV show. If your kids are fans of the show, they'll no doubt enjoy this relaxing and quirky album, since it will remind them of the four characters they see on TV. That said, it's not as much fun as other Teletubbies CDs. Though there's nothing violent or otherwise offensive about the album, the song "Dirty Knees" can be unintentionally salacious, due to the grown man's voice scolding the Teletubbies for having dirty knees and obviously relishing washing them clean -- causing many an adult to snicker while kids remain completely oblivious.
This collection, a re-release of a 1998 album, is enjoyable to listen to, but somewhat lacking in drama. TELETUBBIES: THE ALBUM is mostly instrumental, and since it's essentially a soundtrack of the dreamy, abstract BBC series, nothing much happens. But little ones will like it, especially when they recognize the babble of the fab four, Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa, and Po. The album starts off with an upbeat song called "Puddle Dance," with the Teletubbies chattering away accompanied by a tuba, or tele-tuba if you will. "Ships," the second song, is a pretty number punctuated by the sound of foghorns and the repetition of the melody from "I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In."
"Dirty Knees" is a catchy but odd track, sung by a stern-sounding narrator, admonishing the Teletubbies for having dirty knees and promising to wash them clean. It's kind of cute the way the characters keep saying "dirty knees" in their tiny little voices, but the whole song, with its campy repetition of "dirty knees, wash them clean," feels a bit, shall we say, pervy? Kids, of course, will never notice. One of the most engaging songs is "Dipsy's Fancy Hat," with its happy hoedown vibe. Other tunes bring to mind spooky circuses, New Age reveries, and even a gentle calypso groove.
Families can talk about music and how it makes them feel. Parents can also use this CD as background music while their toddlers play, eat, or ride in a car.
