What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this song is rumored to be about a former flame of Ms. Swift, possibly Taylor Lautner (aka "Jacob") from the Twilight Saga. The two dated one December...hmmm. It's a sweet but melancholy song about love, regret, and forgiveness. Swift has said that the song is indeed about a past boyfriend that she feels deserves an apology. The song is free of sexual references and profanity. However, because the song is about a relationship and remorse, it's best for tweens and teens.

  • Song about regret, remorse, and seeking forgiveness from a past love. "This is me swallowing my pride, standing in front of you saying I'm sorry for that night."
  • Song's about realizing mistakes, "swallowing pride," and 'fessing up when you've hurt someone who didn't deserve it.

What's the story?

"BACK TO DECEMBER" is the fourth single from Taylor Swift's third studio album, Speak Now. Unlike other singles from the album, this song lets Swift embrace her melancholy side; full of regret and remorse, she asks an ex for forgiveness. It's apparently her attempt to make amends for a real-life heartbreak. Like all the songs on Speak Now, this song is penned by the country sweetheart, and shows a vulnerable, pensive side that makes her even more endearing and relatable.

Is it any good?

Although many of Taylor Swift's songs are about teenage daydreams, this song is based on a real-life experience (per her own words) about breaking up and regret. After running into an old flame and realizing her mistake, Swift opines sadly, "This is me swallowing my pride, standing in front of you saying I'm sorry for that night." The lyrics are sweet, smart, and sorrowful, but it's a song that will resonate most with those who have had the experience of feeling heartbroken.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about regret and forgiveness. Have you ever hurt someone? How did you deal with it? Did you "swallow your pride" and ask that person to forgive you? Has someone ever hurt you? Did you forgive them?

  • This song is supposedly about a real former flame of Taylor Swift. Knowing that she has been linked to other teen celebrities and heartthrobs like Joe Jonas and Taylor Lautner, does this make you want to buy the song more?

  • Taylor Swift has been very successful. What do you like about her music?

Good Message
This is a clean song that teaches kids that it's okay to apologize even when it feels like it's too late, thouigh you should've apologized before.

This song is stuck in my head!
This song is wonderful! It's sad, but that doesn't matter. It's beautiful! My only complaint is that it's been stuck in my head for the past week.

I think it's good to have a song about apologizing. Kids need to hear this kind of song. The world is full of people who are "too cool" to admit that they are wrong. So this song sends a really positive message. I like that Taylor admitted that she made a mistake, she's only human.

GO TEAM TAYLOR!
.Taylor swift is an excellent role model, and my mom loves her to pieces. When ever her songs come on, every body in the car sings along, and my verbal approxic sister dances and signs. Yes i said signs not sings. (she is 3) My point is taylor is great for all ages, and an awesome person.

You gave me all your love and all I gave you was goodbye
This is a really sweet song about saying sorry to someone who you've hurt. About how important even if its hard and you have to swallow your pride. And about how all you think about is the mistake you've made but saying sorry can really get it off your chest even if it can't fix the problem

Really, CSP
Highlights: This is a sweet and apologetic catchy tune which is clean. BTW: "Common Sense Parent" is not a real parent, you are a crazy idiot. You let kids listen to Ke$ha yet not Taylor Swift? You are just a stupid teen pretending to be a parent. You hold some sort of grudge against Tay Tay?

It's a Taylor Swift song!!!!
You just gotta respect Taylor wrote it! It's not like Kids think they should smoke or something! She's not writing about that! Seriously! Taylor is a REALLY good artist! It's not 12+ it's 2+! And she's knowing she was wrong and so was he! It's a good lesson, knowing your mistakes! Post Script, IT'S A TAYLOR SWIFT SONG!!!!
