What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this soundtrack of the movie of the same name is typical fairy-tale fare that includes an innocent battle of good versus evil in its musical storytelling. Queen Ariana sings a song about love being inconvenient, tells her daughter to "do something to make herself prettier," and demands revenge on the king for ruining her family's life. But, the songs are fluffy and very age-appropriate.

  • Lessons about fitting in and holding on to family. "I know a chance can be worth taking and that a family can grow/when we have love to guide us as we go."
  • The wicked Queen Ariana poisons cheese with a powder that puts the animals in the kingdom to sleep. This will go over the heads of most young kids.
  • Innocent love between Ro and Prince Antonio.
  • Not applicable.
  • Barbie herself is so commercialized with all the dolls, books, videos, and tie-ins. Fans probably wouldn't pick up the audio CD without having purchased the movie first.

What's the story?

BARBIE AS THE ISLAND PRINCESS -- the original 12-song set adopted from the movie of the same name -- is surprisingly pleasant. There are tunes to dance along to (as in the toe-tapping "Here on My Island") and tunes to sing along to (as in the catchy "At the Ball"). And rounding out the album are the billowy ballads ("Right Here In My Arms").

Is it any good?

The music is light and airy and will appeal to little ears who can enjoy it whether or not they've seen the movie. With popular Cinderella (evil queen and stepmother) and The Little Mermaid (feeling hopeless about fitting in) undertones to the musical story, any child would be glad to add this sweet CD to her collection.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about Ro's (played by Barbie) desire to learn where she comes from. What is your heritage? Perhaps you (or someone you know) are adopted, and are aching to learn about your birth family, much as Ro is in "I Need to Know." And what about falling in love, as Prince Antonio and Ro do? What does it actually mean to love someone?

Amazing Musical!
I love every song on this whole entire soundtrack. It is an amazing movie for all ages. It is FABULOUS! Great for the whole family. My favorite part is the question that keep burning and turning and churning! Whoo hoo! It is all so romantic and nice! But innocent and sweet! It is the best of both worlds! Great for everyone!

SPOILER: In the end the queen finds a chainsaw and slices everyone in half very graphically. Extremely satisfying.
