Parents need to know that this soundtrack of the movie of the same name is typical fairy-tale fare that includes an innocent battle of good versus evil in its musical storytelling. Queen Ariana sings a song about love being inconvenient, tells her daughter to "do something to make herself prettier," and demands revenge on the king for ruining her family's life. But, the songs are fluffy and very age-appropriate.
BARBIE AS THE ISLAND PRINCESS -- the original 12-song set adopted from the movie of the same name -- is surprisingly pleasant. There are tunes to dance along to (as in the toe-tapping "Here on My Island") and tunes to sing along to (as in the catchy "At the Ball"). And rounding out the album are the billowy ballads ("Right Here In My Arms").
The music is light and airy and will appeal to little ears who can enjoy it whether or not they've seen the movie. With popular Cinderella (evil queen and stepmother) and The Little Mermaid (feeling hopeless about fitting in) undertones to the musical story, any child would be glad to add this sweet CD to her collection.
Families can talk about Ro's (played by Barbie) desire to learn where she comes from. What is your heritage? Perhaps you (or someone you know) are adopted, and are aching to learn about your birth family, much as Ro is in "I Need to Know." And what about falling in love, as Prince Antonio and Ro do? What does it actually mean to love someone?
