Parents need to know that this album is a great way to introduce your kids to jug band music; the contemporary lyrics make the music accessible and appealing. From touting the ABC's to seeing the silver lining in every cloud, this album is a lesson in an old-time music and in appreciating the simple things in life.
In her fifth children's album, award-winning singer Maria Muldaur knocks it out of the backyard with her homestyle jug band music on BARNYARD MUSIC, produced using washtubs, spoons, pots, pans, and maybe even the kitchen sink. Jug band emerged in the '20s, and is known for its use of homemade instruments. The twelve songs here are lighthearted, funny, and clever, with lyrics and music you and your kids will love banging and kazoo-ing to.
Maria Muldaur has certainly found her niche in making unique music for children. On Barnyard Dance kids can listen to kazoos and sing about chewing gum that loses flavor, riding camels and carousels, and singing fabulously in the bathtub. Muldaur's slightly raspy, hearty voice sings the storytelling lyrics with warmth and playfulness; kids will be drawn to every song. Standouts include "Circus Song," which takes listeners on a journey through the circus animals and their sounds, and "Relax Your Mind," which teaches kids -- and parents -- that sometimes it's necessary to just be.
Families can talk about jug band music. Years ago, people used spoons, bowls, or anything they could find to make music because they couldn't afford real instruments. Do you ever make music with "jug band" instruments? Do you like the sounds of the songs on this album? What kinds of sounds and instruments do you hear?
The song "Don't Let It Bother You" talks about seeing the silver lining in every stormy cloud. Can you think of a time or instance when you felt sad or down? What did you do to feel better? What kinds of things can you do to help a friend or family member who is feeling upset?
