Parents need to know that this beautiful CD is careful not to offend. If you don't mind "message" songs that take themselves a little too seriously, it's a nearly perfect album. Keep in mind that many teens will simply not be interested, though, as this may be seen as "parent music."
Five for Fighting helped our post-9/11 healing with Superman -- and continue the story on THE BATTLE FOR EVERYTHING. The album starts off with "NY Weather Report," a kind of love song to the city, and continues with a series of looks inside a lover's heart. The main event is singer John Ondrasik's vocal range and passion. He delivers beautifully produced songs with sweeping drama. This is a perfect album for introspective moments -- it's heavy on poetic message and light on humor (as in, there isn't any).
The Battle for Everything is lyrical and lovely, if perhaps a bit heavy-handed. Though well-written, none of the songs are brilliant; perfectionist production and excellent delivery save the day. Though there is no offensive language and no explicit sexuality, the imagery is likely too poetic and sophisticated to be appreciated by younger children.
Families can talk about the mood of the album -- pretty much serious and without humor. Is this music good for reflective moments? Do you enjoy sophisticated message songs?
