"Best I Ever Had" (CD single)
What’s the Story?
Proving that he's one of the hottest new names in rap, Canadian-MC Drake has attracted attention from huge music stars like Kanye West, who directed the video for Drake's single BEST I EVER HAD. In a departure from his collaboration with the rap group Young Money, which unabashedly sings about making every conquest they can, Drake rhymes about one special girl who's won him over simply by being herself: "Sweat pants, hair tied, chillin' with no makeup on / That's when you're the prettiest." That said, he doesn't spare the graphic language or descriptions of their time in the bedroom: "Put the key under the mat / And you know I'll be over there / …I'll be hittin' all the spots that you ain't even know was there." The song's edited version foregos much of the vulgarity.
Is It Any Good?
From its first smooth note, this track draws you in. The alluring beat is backed by soft, cymbal-laden percussion that's not quite slow-song material but makes for a mellow groove nonetheless. Drake keeps his lyrical delivery interesting by alternating between straight-up rapping and an almost sing-songy tone. The vocal performance is marred only by the ubiquitous Autotune that crops up periodically throughout the single.
