Parents need to know that although the CD contains some adult content -- including the occasional f-bomb and sexual description -- it's much cleaner than the average rap or hip-hop album. Parents shouldn't hesitate to get the album for their teens, especially if it's the edited version.
On his first full-length, major-label CD, B.O.B PRESENTS: THE ADVENTURES OF BOBBY RAY, Atlanta native Bobby Ray Simmons (a.k.a. B.o.B) gets help from an impressive roster of guest artists: Hayley Williams of Paramore, Lupe Fiasco, Bruno Mars, Rivers Cuomo of Weezer, T.I., and more. These musicians help B.o.B to explore many of the same topics covered by his contemporaries, including the ups and downs of newfound fame, artistic dominance over the competition, and young love. However, this young artist does it a little bit cleaner than his peers, including less profanity and references to violence, sexual situations, and substances than the average rapper. While there's still an explicit version of this album, it's a lot less offensive than many others out there, and the clean version is definitely OK for kids.
Not only is this record different in terms of its cleaner-than-average content, but its uniqueness also comes through in its sound. From the pop-punk influences of Hayley Williams to the super-smooth vocals of Bruno Mars to the alt-rock overtones of Rivers Cuomo, B.o.B truly pushes the boundaries in each tune, making you eager to hear what's coming next. B.o.B mixes it up himself as well: by both singing and rapping, he lends even more interest to every track.
Families can talk about how a young newcomer like B.o.B can cut an album that's so much more creative than records by older artists who've been around for years. What qualities does a musical artist have to have in order to make an album that's truly special?
What lessons about making an exceptional record can other artists take from B.o.B?
