What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Jon Peter Lewis is yet another American Idol alum with a great voice and a pretty good CD. Content is predictably family-safe, also just a wee bit boring, with a generic pop take on relationships and love.

What's the story?

American Idol alum Jon Peter Lewis applies his considerable vocal talents to a series of very forgettable pop tunes about love and relationships on BREAK THE SILENCE.

Lewis is a good enough singer to make this generic collection of songs work pretty well despite vapid, predictable lyrics that have absolutely nothing new to say. Skillful guitar work and some very talented friends adding their efforts to Lewis' fine voice save the day.

Is it any good?

One highlight is "To Make You Feel My Love," a minimalist ballad featuring just vocals and finger-picked guitar, on which Lewis drops the signature Idol urge to over-emote and sings, simply and beautifully. Another is "Bridges," a refreshingly bluesy oasis rising up out of the derivative folk-rock-pop mist, on which Lewis really sings it like he means it -- and sounds way more mature and less whiney than on other tracks. It's hard not to be won over by these understated presentations, especially compared to the earnest instrumental bloat that tends to take over on Break the Silence.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about Idol. It's interesting to note that Jon Peter Lewis got famous because he was on the popular TV show. Do you think he'd have found the same success on his own, without the benefit of national TV exposure? Families can also discuss the song "Bridges." Can you think of ways to build emotional bridges between yourself and others, when you feel like there's a miscommunication?
