Carole and Paula in the Magic Garden
What’s the Story?
Back in 1977 The Magic Garden was in its prime as a hit children's television show on PBS stations across the country. In fact in its 12-year history, it became the most successful regional children's program of its time. The CD, CAROLE & PAULA IN THE MAGIC GARDEN spotlights the stars of that show, Paula Janis and Carole Demas. Most of the songs are styled in the pair's trademark fast-paced, high-pitched lighthearted style. "The Hello Song" shows off the duo's memory and linguistic skills as they rattle off hundreds, maybe thousands of names in this introductory song, while the animated "Ragtime Annie" gives a glimpse at what the full-televised experience of the Magic Garden must have been like.
Is It Any Good?
Children will probably find the harmonious vocals soothing but some parents, especially those who aren't nostalgic for the classic TV show, might find themselves cringing a bit at the ultra-sweet (xylophone accompanied!) flowery singing. In fact, the six-minute "Happy Makes Me Clap" and over-the-top sound effects might be too much for some older listeners. But the majority of the songs are short and sweet and with "The Chuckle Patch" joke interlude and idyllic folk-rock tracks like "Happiness" (reminiscent of Peter, Paul and Mary) and a fine rendition of "Pop Goes the Weasel" this collection of retro songs should appeal to kids from any generation.
