Parents need to know that here's a CD that will be listened to again and again for its gentle vocals and refreshing acoustic variations on familiar songs. Play it at bedtime after reading the accompanying board book illustrating the title track or anytime you want calm rather than frenzy.
Rock singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb keeps it light and playful with old friend, former nursery school teacher, and fellow rocker Elizabeth Mitchell on CATCH THE MOON. The collaboration features the women's voices, acoustic guitars, banjo, fiddle, children's laughter, and surprises. Slipped into a board book with watercolor renderings of the story behind the title tune, the CD could follow a bedtime reading and play past lights out. "Stop and Go" is pared-down rock & roll with fun wordplay. "Butterfly" is lovely with single voice and guitar. The Japanese "Donguri" (Rolling Acorn) tosses the melody line back and forth. By the time the lullaby "Fais Do Do" finishes with a trio in French, listeners will be ready for a nap or happy to hit replay!
With sweet but not saccharine vocals, this heartfelt CD presents traditional fare such as "Little Red Caboose," "Oh Susana," and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" so freshly that the songs carry the pleasure of hearing them as if for the first time. Only 2 of the 13 tunes -- the original title track and a rendition of Dylan's "New Morning" -- border on the monotonous.
Families can talk about what elements (if any) of this music create a happy mood -- lyrics, instruments, background laughter, the beat? Do you find that music can improve your mood?
