common sense media says

Fresh electro-pop is fine for older tweens and up.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that there's one s-word but not much else to worry about here. The song is about dealing with someone who thinks she's superior, but in a non-threatening, brush-it-off kind of way.

Positive messages: Don't let someone else's attitude get under your skin.
Positive role models: It's too early to say for sure, but for now it seems that Posner is living a positive, clean lifestyle.
Violence: Not applicable.
Sex: Not applicable.
Language: One s-word.
Consumerism: Mention of Dior and designer sunglasses.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about how this song is about someone who thinks she's "too cool" for someone else. Do you know anyone like this, or have you ever met someone who made you feel this way? What did you do? How could you react in this situation?
  • What do you think the singer is trying to say in this song? What do you like about it? How does listening to this song make you feel? Why?

What's the story?

What's the story?
Newcomer and Duke University grad Mike Posner shows his songwriting and producing skills on the lead single from his upcoming debut album, "COOLER THAN ME." Its sleek, electro-pop groove draws you in from the start with finger snaps, '80s style keyboard grinds, and bass beats. Posner's boyish looks and Justin Timberlake-like vocals make this song about a designer-wearing diva who's fickle and frustrating all the more relatable and meaningful for kids.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

"Cooler Than Me" poignantly portrays the frustration of dealing with someone who thinks he or she is too cool. The music is sleek and catchy, with honest lyrics saying, "you got designer shades, to hide your face in, that's probably because you think you're cooler than me." The great thing about this song, other than its super-cool beat, is that it's relatable for everyone. Hopefully the mean girls in middle schools across America are listening...

I would buy this song is he didn't say the s-word. I like Mike Posner he is pretty clean and doesn't seem drunk 24/7 like most stars. Nothing more to say

Sort of fun to sing along I guess but i hate this song.
Posners breathy voice is annoying and sounds ridiculous, and what is really being portrayed is "you think you're cooler than me, which makes me cooler than you. you're just ridiculous." i don't know all this song showed me is HE thinks he's better and 'above it all'. :P ugh.

I love the lyrics of this song, the message is not to be angry when someone's cooler than you! And the music is cool!

One bad word, but they play it on the radio all the time.
They lay 1 S-Bomb, but kids in my grade and even my 10-year old brothers grade say worse.

Annoyingly catchy song.
Its catchy, but in kind of an annoying way. It also says one bad word, but it dosent sound like he's saying it. They also say designer shades, which is a little bit of consumerism, but i dont really get whats so bad about consumerism.

Early Teens
The song is very catchy, though a bit overplayed by radio stations. In one point of the music video, when Mike Posner is trying on all of the sunglasses, he puts on a pair that allow him to see through some of the girls clothes to their under garments.

S word bleeped
"And you wear 'em around like it ain't--SSHHH!!!". That's it. It's bleeped out.

YOU CALL THIS CLEAN?!?!
Most people say this song is considered "clean." So, you're saying that this sentence from the song "Shoes on your feet, you wear 'em around like it ain't s--t." is clean?! Well, you're wrong!
