What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this song is a fun, flirty track about country girls shaking their business from the tractor to the dance floor. There's some minor innuendo as well as the obvious, albeit playful, objectification of a female, but it's the nature of the song to appreciate and celebrate the Southern female's ability to, well, shake it. There's no sex or mention of alcohol, so if you're OK having your kids shakin' theirs, then it's fine for most ages.

  • There are some stereotypes about Southerners/country dwellers being "rednecks." Although it's implied that country girls have a bit of a wild streak, this is still just a fun, flirty song about girls having a good time.
  • The song is playful and clean, like most country music, but setting your sights on being a country girl shakin' her stuff for everyone and his brother may not be what you want for your daughter. However, there's no sex or drugs involved, so that's certainly positive.
  • Not applicable.
  • Some minor innuendo as well as the obvious -- albeit playful -- objectification of a female.

What's the story?

Luke Bryan is country music's flirty boy next door, oozing with Southern charm and just the right amount of bad boy. His sophomore album, Doin' My Thing, was a huge hit, and now he's following it up with "COUNTRY GIRL (SHAKE IT FOR ME)," the lead single off of his third album. Co-written by Bryan, it's fun, flirty song that celebrates the beauty of a country girl who moves when the music comes on.

Is it any good?

It's hard not to like Bryan, with his sweet, Southern charisma and genuine country twang. "Country Girl (Shake It for Me)" is so catchy and fun, you can't help but shake your own moneymaker; the tune may inspire a family dance party. The lyrics are perfect for singing along to the radio or enjoying the warm summer months outside: "Shake it for the young bucks sitting in the honky-tonks, for the rednecks rockin' til the break of dawn ... Shake it for the birds, shake it for the bees, shake it for the catfish swimming down deep in the creek."

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about what makes country music different from pop or rock music. Why do you think that strong language and sex are less frequent in country songs? Does this make it more appealing?

  • This song is fun and lighthearted, but it does play on stereotypes about country music and country girls. Do you think this is OK? Can you name some other stereotypes about country music and Southerners? What about other genres of music?

Innapropriate
I strongly dislike country music, so I don't know why I was listening to it. But I this song and was SHOCKED. I personally think it's quite offensive to women, just like most songs these days. I'm 17, but I'm not ready to get a job, so I babysit my 4 year old cousin. She LOVES country music and has her dad's old iPhone, obviously with no service, to listen to music and play games. I asked her what her favorite song on her iPhone was and she said Country Girl Shake It For Me Now and then she started belting out the hook, which said shake it for the birds shake it for the bees. I thought "oh what has happened to children these days?!?!?" I then concluded that this song isn't appropriate for children. Conclusion: don't let your children listen for this song.

Good song
It's talking about girls shaking their butts for a guy or Luke Bryan. But overall, a good tune, and cool lyrics. I like this song now. I didn't before. (:
