What’s the Story?
Among the most successful American Idol alums of all time, country-music powerhouse Carrie Underwood offers a command performance on COWBOY CASANOVA. The first cut from her upcoming album
Play On, this song warns women away from an irresistable yet ultimately bad guy -- a "cool drink of water" who's actually a "devil in disguise" that will "mess with your mind" and "tell you anything you wanna hear." Despite this downbeat theme, the lyrics generally adhere to Underwood's clean image by omitting foul language or graphic descriptions, aside from one reference to the guy being "like a drug" to which girls can get "addicted."
Is It Any Good?
"Cowboy Casanova" has all the makings of a country hit: Underwood's knock-out vocals, lots of slide guitar, and old-time fiddle. That said, it's no great feat of songwriting prowess, falling back on common country-music themes and arrangements that make the song a far cry from classics-material.
