Why We Rated This iffy for Ages 16–17

What to watch out for

  • Messages:

The rap single begins with Eminem introducing himself with these lyrics: "In this corner, weighing 175 pounds, with a record of 17 rapes, 400 assaults, and 4 murders, the undisputed, most diabolic villain in the world: Slim Shady!"
  • Violence:

Eminem introduces himself by bragging that he is a rapist and murder.
  • Sex:

The chorus includes the lyrics, "O-oh o-oh, bitches hopping in my Tahoe, got one riding shotgun and no not one of them got clothes, now where's the rubbers? Whose got the rubbers? I noticed there's so many of them and there's really not that many of us." Although the song marginally promotes safe sex, women, or bitches, as they are continually referred to in the song, are portrayed as disposable sex toys.
  • Language:

Bitch is frequently used in the song and there are also a few s--ts and f--ks. The "N" word is used once by 50 Cent. Eminem also makes a lewd comment about male genitalia.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

The song's title sums it up: Crack a Bottle, encouraging listeners to open up some bottles of alcohol and get the party started. As 50 Cent raps, "It's bottle after bottle, the money ain't a thang when you party with me." There's also brief allusions to drunk driving and smoking marijuana.

What Parents Need to Know

About "Crack a Bottle" (CD single)

Parents need to know that although this song is getting lots of press for being such a huge hit, it's definitely not for kids -- no matter how much they may argue that their friends have downloaded it! Although there is a smattering of expletives throughout the song, the tone of misogyny and immorality is what makes this single a no-go for anyone under 17.

    Onoz.

This song is offensive, sexual, violent, and generally a terrible influence. But catchy. Now and then I listen to music I don't have to feel anything; listen to the rythm of the words, not what they say. I listen to his song My Dad's Gone Crazy. Offensive but catchy. So I listen now and again. Mature teens only.
