What parents need to know

Parents need to know that although this song is getting lots of press for being such a huge hit, it's definitely not for kids -- no matter how much they may argue that their friends have downloaded it! Although there is a smattering of expletives throughout the song, the tone of misogyny and immorality is what makes this single a no-go for anyone under 17.

  • The rap single begins with Eminem introducing himself with these lyrics: "In this corner, weighing 175 pounds,
with a record of 17 rapes, 400 assaults, and 4 murders,
the undisputed, most diabolic villain in the world:
    Slim Shady!"
  • Eminem introduces himself by bragging that he is a rapist and murder.
  • The chorus includes the lyrics, "O-oh o-oh, bitches hopping in my Tahoe, got one riding shotgun and no not one of them got clothes,
now where's the rubbers? Whose got the rubbers?
I noticed there's so many of them
and there's really not that many of us." Although the song marginally promotes safe sex, women, or bitches, as they are continually referred to in the song, are portrayed as disposable sex toys.
  • Bitch is frequently used in the song and there are also a few s--ts and f--ks. The "N" word is used once by 50 Cent. Eminem also makes a lewd comment about male genitalia.
  • Not applicable.
  • The song's title sums it up: Crack a Bottle, encouraging listeners to open up some bottles of alcohol and get the party started. As 50 Cent raps, "It's bottle after bottle,
the money ain't a thang when you party with me." There's also brief allusions to drunk driving and smoking marijuana.

What's the story?

CRACK A BOTTLE received a record-breaking 418,000 downloads in its first week online. The single, for now, holds the title for best sales in its opening week. Of course, one major reason for the success of the single is due to the lyrical draught rap audiences have been experiencing from Eminem, Dr. Dre, and 50 Cent. Eminem has been on a nearly four-year hiatus and this release marks his re-emergence to the music scene. This song is off the album Relapse.

Is it any good?

Collaborations seem to be a sure-fire means to success in the rap game. Take three or four popular rappers, group their rhymes together and you got yourself a hit. Many times however the result is an incoherent mess of verses. But on this single, Eminem keeps things running smoothly by not only setting the tone with on-point raps, but providing a chorus that is instantly appealing. As far as lyrical content goes, there's nothing dramatically new here -- the rappers cover the same territory that has always worked for them in the past. With its misogynistic, gross, and violent imagery, this song is for grown-up rap fans only.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about why this song is so popular. Do you think the immediate success of the song is due to Eminem's inactivity in recent years? Do you think it can sometimes help an artist to drop out of the spotlight and then wage a comeback? Can you think of any other artists who have had successful comebacks?

Great Song
Really nothing bad in it, if you've heard other Eminem songs you'll be fine. But it really isn't as offensive as some others
