Parents need to know that this spirited track about not
living by other people's rules is really a healthy tribute to the importance of being yourself.
As one of the tracks from Nickolodeon's upcoming movie musical, Spectacular!, DON'T TELL ME is about doing things your way and not playing by someone else's rules. It's a non-stop rush of the show's rock superstar, Nikko Alexander, belting out declarations like "I'm not about to compromise just so I can blend right in" and "Don't tell me what I gotta do, because it's up to me, it's not up to you."
Like many singles from musicals, this song is harder to appreciate without being able to connect it to the story line or the free-spirited character singing it. It's a little noisy and frenetic, and when it's over you may want to play something calming to balance out the manic energy. Some of the song's lyrics have a rebellious theme, but the overall message is about not doing things simply to conform.
Families can talk about how teen musicals are turning into big money-making machines with their sequels, soundtracks, and stuff to buy. What makes some musicals smash hits, while others are entirely forgettable? For tween and teens: This song is about doing things according to your own rules. When is it important to be yourself and not let others dictate your actions, and when is it important to do things that are expected of you?
