This is a great album for kids who like punk rock/pop-punk. Sure, it has some explicit content, but I'm sure your kid has heard 1477284 times worse at school. Definitely buy this for the rockstar in the family.
This album is great for anyone that likes alternative/punk rock, despite the "bad language" and singular reference to masturbation in the song "Longview". It's classic Green Day, and now a piece of punk rock history.
Now famous alt-rockers' oldie but goody....watch out for adult themes....
While this album may have some explicit themes, it is a very good album and should be okay for a 13 or 14 year old and up. The lyrics deal with adult issues sometimes including Abuse (Pulling Teeth), Sexuality (Coming Clean), Violence Having a Blast) and Insanity (Basket Case) but will also appeal to teens with topics like Boredom (Longview), Divorce (In the End) and many others, but of course they would have to be able to dissect and understand the album. The reason I say 14 and up is because of the adult topics such as violence, masturbation, relationship abuse, insanity and drug use. There is also some profanity, mostly the words "s--t", "d-mn" and "h-ll" and maybe one or two uses of "f--k". There is also a little bit of drug use (what do you think the name Green Day means?) but most teens will probably look over that. The songs are very good lyrically and the music is pretty good, but not all teens will get the lyrics. Make sure you know your teen will. Green Day's music was way better back in the early 90s time period then all of this American Idiot and 21 Guns crap you hear from them repeatedly today. This is definitely somewhat of a hidden gem.
Good music. I'm twelve, and because I have Green Day Rock Band, I know what songs to shy away from. (Longview in particular.) There are a few language issues, but as someone else pointed out, it's nothing we haven't seen. The language is everywhere, but that doesn't mean it's neccesarily acceptible.
My advice: Look up the lyrics before buying the song, and enjoy the music.
Awesome album. Typical, angsty teenagers, you know? But great, great stuff. Not for tweens, I think. The language is kind of rough but it's still cool. Music's music, man.
Wow. Are we going to ban 'Basket Case' because it say's "I went to a whore?" This album had new sound. And in my opinion nothing else should matter. Billie Joe has kid's and a wife he's not gonna go to far. Green Day is my favorite band and nuttin' messed up with me.
When they say sex is "non-applicable, i have no idea what they mean. The song Longview (great song, awesome bassline) is about masturbation, they even use the word in the song. Also, Bascet case talks about a whore and mention sex. The song Longview also uses the "F" word more than once or twice.
i think this is an amazing record.
yeah, there is some swearing and drug references, but what else would you expect from 22-year-old punk rockers? just don't buy it for a little kid...
This is one of green days best albums, my favorites songs from green day are redundant and jackass. Ok so year there's language but who cares it's Green Day.
this album is pretty good but what csm did not no is there is bad sexual behavior such as 1 part in longview "When masturbation's lost its fun" and in basket case it says "i went to a whore" and the language isn't all that great either it says F@ck and SH!T so before you by it read this
Some cussing, violent imagery, and traditional punk additude, but a great album!
This is my second favorite Green Day album (second to Insomniac). Songs contain a lot of s**ts and some f**ks, as well as violent imagery and punk additude! But it's not too bad, and it's definitely worth the minimal trouble.
Off for 8 and under, iffy for 9-10, on for 11+
Green Day's third studio album is actually one of their cleanest. There is some violence in "Having a Blast", and sex includes "she said it's lack of sex that's bringin' me down" and
"I went to a whore" in the song "Basket Case", masturbation references in "All By Myself" and "Longview". Language is an issue. Green Day loves to curse, but this album doesn't showcase it. There is one use of s--t in "Burnout" (these s--t town lights), two uses of s--t in "Having a Blast" (all the s--t you put me through/any bulls--t that confronts you), three uses of s--t and two uses of f--k in "Longview" (same old s--t/f--king lazy/smell like s--t twice/f--king lonely), and four uses of f--k in "F.O.D".
