What parents need to know

Parents need to know that while "The Edge of Glory" doesn't include profanity or graphic references to sex, substance use (aside from one line about drinking a shot), or violence, it makes stormy romantic relationships seem cool -- a troubling message that often crops up in Lady Gaga songs. Parents might want to point out that the behavior that's glamorized here isn't healthy in real life.

  • Perpetuates the allure of addictive relationships: "I need a man that thinks it's right when it's so wrong."
  • Advocates crossing the line into negative relationship behavior: "It's time to feel the rush, to push the dangerous / I'm gonna run back to, to the edge with you where we can both fall over in love."

What's the story?

"THE EDGE OF GLORY" is the second single from the album Born This Way by mega pop star Lady Gaga. Unlike many of her earlier hits, this track omits graphic descriptions of sex, substance use, and violence, and it steers clear of explicit language. But the song makes harmful romantic relationships seem cool -- the wrong message to send to young tweens and teens in the process of learning how to develop healthy relationships. Parents of the younger set may want to explain the ropes to their kids before letting them listen to this song.

Is it any good?

The ubiquitous sound of the synthesizer is once again present in this Lady Gaga tune, though it's backed by a refreshing saxophone hook that helps distinguish this song from the rest of the pack. Gaga's pipes also sound especially strong here, demonstrating that she can keep up with the best of pop's vocal big guns.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about why some people are drawn to bad relationships. Why would someone decide to stay in -- or even seek out -- a relationship that harms them?

  • Lady Gaga's songs tend to celebrate unhealthy relationships. Why do you think she continues to sing about this topic?

I really can't stand Lady Gaga. I've heard a little bit of this song but, I can't stand her long enough to listen to the whole song. She's is pretty much (like i've said in other reviews about Gaga) a talentless hypocrite who says to respect and accept everyone but, when it comes to Catholics she pretty much says &"What the hell? I'm Lady Gaga, does it really matter if I disrespect a religion that I was raised with?" Don't waste your time listening to someone as disgusting as Lady Gaga.

By Jove, I think she's back!!!!
I halfheartedly listened to this, just hoping that it was even close to the material that the GaGa I knew and loved, and I admit wholeheartedly, I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!!! It was actually satisfying, unlike the sad material she recently produced. There is some iffy stuff, but it doesn't really stand out. I would also like to add that I agree with the wise DexterSmith about everything except the Xtina part. Sorry, but she was not in my time :) And to teamjacobgirl2.0 I have to say that even though you dislike GaGa's music and attitude, she means it when she says to love and accept yourself. The little Catholic situation was not what you say it is, exactly. I, too, dislike Judas, but realize that she probably didn't think of it as you put it. She holds great respect for her religion, as she has stated.

Love it!
This song is one of the few Gaga songs that is totally clean. The whole 5 and a half minutes of the song are clean. I don't think stormy relationships are being idolized, and as far as I can see, 5:30 is about as long as you'll get of cleanness at a Gaga concert, so absorb it.

This song has no profanity "edge"
I love this song, it is catchy and a good song with nothing bad in it. Finally a song by GaGa that is completely safe for kids.

Flawless
This song is GREAT!!! Gaga's powerful vocals, combined with this fast pace beat is harmony made in heaven(: I dont see how this should be "off ' for anyone because theres no inappropriate language, except for bmentioning an alcoholic shot, which isnt really that big of a deal. beautiful intro,, and catchy synth beat. Gaga is kind of controversial though, so it depends on your personal preference if you would let your small children listen1

Hmm....
Well I like it but I don't think kids should really listen to Judas because it says 'hooker' and yeah... but Born This Way is great, it is telling you to except yourself for who you are, but then again, it is also supposed to be about gay people I don't know if that is appropriate... (oh my gosh I just read this I AM SO SORRY IF THIS OFFENDED ANYONE I JUST MEANT THAT YOU MIGHT NOT WANT A KID SINGING IT IF YOU DONT WANT THEM TO)
