What parents need to know

Parents need to know that Mariah Carey has the clout -- and sales figures -- to get the best of everything. That said, this album is impeccably produced and beautifully performed with very little actual content to get in the way. If you like pop divas and glossy ear candy, this will be a favorite.

  • Sappy and a little retro, but really doesn't have much to say in any direction.
  • Nothing to worry about.
  • Some steamy innuendo.

What's the story?

Mariah Carey's sensational voice is shown off to its best advantage on her new album. Yet content is, well, nearly nonexistent. Warbling on and on about pretty much nothing, Mariah and her lyrics do get pretty steamy here and there, and she coyly veers away from a four-letter word once or twice. Compared to most contemporary top-40, they are pretty mild.

Is it any good?

Though Carey's vocal acrobatics may seem overblown (just because you can doesn't necessarily mean you always should), they are amazing and impressive. "The Voice" never lets anyone else steal the show for very long despite impressive appearances by Twista, Snoop Dogg, Nelly, Pharrell Williams, and Jermaine Dupree. The real stars here are the diva's vocal range and the production standards and musicianship applied to the whole project. If you like glossy, sugar-spun music with very little substance, you'll love THE EMANCIPATION OF MIMI.

Explore, discuss, enjoy

Families can talk about how they think Mariah Carey compares to other pop singers. When it comes to being a successful artist, is it more important to have a strong voice or a strong sense of style that translates well on MTV?

I love her voice and singing! She is like an angel singing!
Her music is not bad. She does not make bad music or says nasty things like other people.
