What parents need to know

Parents need to know that the 18 songs on this compilation kids' CD are retreads, brought together for the purpose of charity proceeds. Though some of the songs are kid classics, like "Itsy Bitsy Spider," they are performed by grown-up singers like Little Richard and Bob Dylan.

What's the story?

EVERY CHILD DESERVES A LIFETIME is studded with big celebrity names, many of the first-name-only variety (Barbara! Cher! Sting!), but oddly enough, the CD lacks spark. Though there are some gems in there (Carly Simon and James Taylor's iconic version of "Mockingbird," for instance), other songs are heavy on the electronic keyboards, which ends up sounding more cheesy than inspirational. In theory, a CD like this sounds like a great formula for music that'll appeal to the whole family -- but unfortunately it doesn't.

Is it any good?

The songs on Every Child Deserves a Lifetime are all retreads -- recorded for other albums and gathered together for this compilation -- and it shows. There's no continuity and the songs feel plunked down in the collection instead of organically arranged.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about why it's important to donate to charitable organizations. Do kids understand how charity works and why it is important? Families can also talk about the big stars on this album. Why would someone with a successful career want to be a part of a project like this? Do you think it helps their image?
