A Family Album (by The Verve Pipe, Children's Music)

common sense media says

Eclectic mix of tunes celebrates the joys of childhood.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this group, a popular alt-rock band since the '90s with hits like "The Freshman," makes the transition to children's music spectacularly. This family album is full of fun, eclectic songs and sounds of childhood. There's nothing to be concerned about here.

Positive messages: Fun, positive messages about family, imagination, and the everyday life of a kid. "Only One of You" is a sweet song of reassurance to a kid who suddenly isn't the only child anymore.
Positive role models: Encourages kids to be happy, imagine, and even, perhaps, be part of the band.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about how it has become a common occurrence for pop and rock bands to start making children's music. Why do you think this is? Do you think the band members have become parents themselves? Do you think a musician needs to be a mom or dad to make good children's music?

  • The song "Only One of You" talks about the uncertainty of becoming a big brother or sister. Have you ever been jealous of your little brother or sister? How did it make you feel? Does this song make you feel better? What do you think the song is trying to say?

What's the story?

What's the story?

The Verve Pipe ("The Freshman") has changed their tune to make their first children's album, A FAMILY ALBUM. It's a fun, eclectic mix of rock, folk, and pop that uses an array of instruments and sounds to create ten tracks about the silliness and loveliness of childhood and family. From seeing a family grow to the power of cereal, this album will have the entire family smiling and enjoying the music together.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

The Verve Pipe has jumped on the bandwagon of under-the-radar musicians who, perhaps after a hiatus of mainstream hits, try their hands at children's music. While this transition doesn't always prove to be a good one for some bands, for TVP the move to the kiddie genre is as natural as Kashi cereal. Their alt-pop style mixed with horns, rooster calls, and tambourines makes these songs about family and childhood unique. From the rockin' "Wake-Up" to the sweet "Go to Sleep Now," a precious lullaby for those tender moments before bedtime, A Family Album could be a soundtrack for a day in the life of a child. Take note of the sure-to-be-fave "Be Part of the Band" -- it's a cool call to kiddies to be a rocker when they grow up -- or at least in their living room with a hairbrush mic and a family audience.

My new fave band (and oh yeah, the kids like it too).
Much Much more positive than the CD we listened to when we were kids. I have recommended this to friends with kids who love to rock out! I am a big fan if the kids rock music, like Jack Johnson and They Might Be Giants, so if you catch yourself humming those tunes, go for this too.
