What parents need to know

Parents need to know that if they haven't already checked out the three elementary school teachers collectively known as Recess Monkey, they should. Their seventh album is a super-cool mix of pop, rock, funk, and fun, with subtle lessons and music that will make parents and preschoolers dance, smile, and dream.

  • Education doesn't always have to come from a school book; teaches kids to be creative and imaginative with the world that's right in front of them everyday.
  • Positive messages that celebrate childhood and feeling like a "superhero," even if you're only jumping on a bed.
  • School teachers sing songs for kids that families will love, with lots of positive messages and music to inspire little minds and dancing feet.
  • Not applicable.

What's the story?

Recess Monkey is a Seattle-based band of elementary school rockers, yes, rockers, who’ve taken a unique talent for creating music that kids and parents will genuinely enjoy to inspire creativity, dance moves, and imagination. The fourteen tracks on FLYING! embrace and celebrate being a kid, whether it's the joy of pretending to be a superhero or simply viewing school as the ultimate day job.

Is it any good?

Who knew elementary school teachers could be so cool? Their music is playful and sometimes theatrical and goes from sounding like The Beatles to Buddy Holly, bringing childhood memories to life through clever lyrics about the awesomeness of a bunk bed or the sweetness of an imaginary friend. Whether driving in the minivan -- er, supervan -- or chasing your kiddos around the house in a bed sheet cape, the songs on Flying! will bring out the superkid in anyone.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about positive ways to channel creativity and imagination. How do you like to express yourself? Art, music, writing, dance, or something else?

  • Why do you think it's important to have an imagination? What kinds of jobs require imagination?
