What parents need to know

Parents need to know that there is mild sexual innuendo and talk of infidelity on many of Rihanna's songs, but also a gentle message of empowerment for girls. There is also some violent imagery.

  • Some gently empowering messages for girls.
  • Some violent imagery in a relationship context -- one mention of handcuffs in sex play.
  • A lot of innuendo, nothing explicit. A few mentions of infidelity.

What's the story?

On A GIRL LIKE ME, Rihanna tries to keep the party going with some very danceable songs, interspersed with a large helping of heartfelt ballads. She starts off with the irresistibly danceable "SOS" before drifting off into a more thoughtful and pensive mood. The CD seems designed to show off Rihanna's increased emotional depth and range as she matures artistically. The songs work, but some fans might miss the fun vibe of Music of the Sun.

Is it any good?

A Girl Like Me is expressive, even a little soulful, but less exciting and far less exotic than Rihanna's debut. Lovesick teens will respond to the heartbreak stuff as much as the dance tunes, but others might find the songs a bit tedious. The themes are a bit more substantial as well as more blatantly sexual, but without being explicit. A gentle message of empowerment for girls shows up in several of the tunes, addressing issues of self-esteem and controlling one's own life and loves.

What families can talk about

Families can talk about what it might be like to have pop music success like Rihanna's while still a teenager. What are the benefits? What might the downside be? What does the album title really mean?

Horrible...I hate her first two albums
This album sucks. I am glad it's clean and appropriate, but the old Rihanna is really pathetic. She couldn't write. After this album, she never wrote her own songs, until Talk That Talk came. This was before. Before she was Rihanna, before she had talent, before she was creative, and before she was good. This album sucks. It's horrible, nothing catchy or fun about it. So dull. This is just a failed attempt to come into the music world, her first album was actually better.
