What parents need to know

Parents need to know that while the CD doesn't cover the most risque of Madonna's classic songs, it contains a few that feature semi-mature lyrics -- including "Like a Virgin" and "Like a Prayer."

  • Most of the songs reflect positive messages; in "Express Yourself," for example, Madonna encourages listeners not to "settle for second best."
  • In terms of their role model status, Madonna and the Glee characters share common ground: though they've all done some questionable things, they try to lead good lives overall.
  • Not applicable.
  • Some sexual references on "Like a Virgin," "Like a Prayer," and "What It Feels Like for a Girl."

What's the story?

In its second season, the smash TV hit Glee has continued to release albums containing songs from the show. GLEE: THE MUSIC, THE POWER OF MADONNA is the first compilation from that season, featuring seven tracks that span the decades-long career of pop queen Madonna. For the most part, the record steers clear of the singer's most mature songs and focuses instead on her more inspiring and lighthearted tunes, including "Express Yourself," "Borderline," "Vogue," and "Open Your Heart." That said, the track list still includes a few eyebrow-raisers: "Like a Virgin," "Like a Prayer," and "What It Feels Like for a Girl." Jonathan Groff, the actor who plays Lea Michele's love interest, provides guest vocals on three tracks.

Is it any good?

Madonna may not have the strongest vocals in the world, but she's still become one of the biggest pop stars ever -- making it sound somewhat strange to hear her songs covered, even if it's by better singers. As a result, tunes like "Express Yourself" and "Like a Virgin" don't have quite the same impact as the originals, and newer songs, including "What It Feels Like for a Girl" and "4 Minutes," (Madonna's recent collaboration with Justin Timberlake) draw you in a bit more.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the relevance that Madonna's music has to a new generation of young people. Though the singer is now well into her 50s, what makes kids like the Glee cast want to sing her songs?

  • Why might the show have chosen to cover this particular collection of Madonna songs and opted against others?
