"Glitter in the Air" (CD single) (by Pink, R&B/Pop)

common sense media says

Stark, emotionally raw ballad is fine for teens.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that although you might see a Parental Advisory sticker on this single, the song is most definitely NOT offensive; in fact, it's perfectly safe for most tweens and teens. There's one racy line, but nothing really explicit. The highly emotional level of the song might make it too much for younger listeners, but angst-ridden teens should revel in the drama.

Positive messages:  Romantic complexities and the human condition are dissected on this sentimental ballad.
Positive role models: Empathy is a big theme, with Pink showing listeners that they aren't the only ones who have been lonely, desperate, or heartbroken. "Have you ever hated yourself; for staring at the phone, your whole life waiting on the ring to prove you're not alone."
Sex: Only one line that might raise some eyebrows: "Have you ever fed a lover with just your hands?"

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about Pink's much-talked about 2010 Grammy performance. Why do you think it got so much attention? Was it her acrobatic skill, barely-there costume, or dangerous feats that got you talking? Do you think female performers have to go to more extremes than their male counterparts?  Do you think this raises the bar for what musicians need to do to entertain audiences? Is singing just not enough anymore?
  • Talk about Parental Advisory warnings. Can they sometimes be misleading? Should parents still do some research into the music or just follow the label? If an album carries the label, do you think there could be some safe songs on the LP?
  • Talk about emotional issues and how to best express your feelings. Does it help to listen to songs like this when you're feeling down? Can you identify with Pink's message, and does that help make you feel you aren't alone in your feelings?

What's the story?

What's the story?
If you tuned into the 2010 Grammys, you know that Pink amazed audiences with her Cirque du Soleil-inspired trapeze performance of "GLITTER IN THE AIR." It was more like Pink in the air for most of the performance, and the test of bravery immediately sent the song soaring on the download charts. From her 2009 album, Funhouse, the slow ballad tackles some pretty heavy subject matter in a musically bare-bones manner compared to most of the pop singer's other hits.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Pink has never been one to run away from reality, and this single falls right in line with her straight-shooting sound. Powerfully stark and emotionally raw, Pink's vocals are on center stage here with only minimal instrumental accompaniment. With lyrics that hit home and a beautiful finale, the song never crosses the line into being overly dramatic or patronizing. Add to that the mental image of Pink twirling through the air, and the moment is complete!
