Parents need to know that Modest Mouse's moody poetry will be appreciated by some teens; inappropriate for others. A sprinkling of four-letter words and obsessive death imagery puts this CD in the your-mileage-may-vary category.
Somehow GOOD NEWS FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE BAD NEWS, from Washington State band Modest Mouse, slipped by the Parental Advisory police without a sticker, despite a sprinkling of four-letter words and an apparent obsession with death, coffins, and guns, however poetic (or even anti-violence). For more mature teens who understand the difference between real life and song lyrics, there's a lot to love about this album. For more squeamish, immature, or impressionable teens, you could make a better choice.
The members of Modest Mouse really pull together on this CD, sounding more focused than ever before with simpler lyrics and arrangements, yet just as passionate and exciting as on previous projects. The lyrics could be a lesson in good songwriting for teenagers who know how to put poetic death references into perspective. For less mature or literate teens, the subtleties of anti-violence messages that rely on violent imagery may get lost. While not for everyone, this CD is interesting, well written, well produced, and beautifully performed.
Families can talk about how dark, death-related lyrics in songs can be appreciated, but with some perspective. And how can such dark lyrics also be poetic?
