What's the story?

What's the story?
GROOVE TO THE MUSIC features music from

The Backyardigans, a beloved Nick Jr. TV show. The CD utilizes a wide variety of musical styles on 18 short songs meant for toddler enjoyment. Though most parents will find this selection of babyish vocals and repetitive lyrics tiresome, many will appreciate the well-played instrumental tracks and the impressive array of international music themes. The strongest tracks are those that pay tribute to genres with American roots. "What's So Scary 'bout That?" and "The Ballad of the Brave Pink Knight" deal with fear of the dark and being brave, with lyrics that are more interesting and well-written than the rest, and terrific big band/jump-swing backing tracks. "Aha!" boasts wonderful folksy acoustic guitar and a sly message about being a hero.

Is it any good?

The CD offers an opportunity to introduce toddlers to a variety of music styles, including rock, pop, Celtic, calypso, Dixieland, and reggae rhythms. While "I Love Being a Princess" and "Oh, My Sherman" (inexplicably sung to the tune of "My Darling Clementine") could easily have been left off the CD, most songs should delight the very young. Little children who love the Backyardigans are likely to be enchanted, and parents might enjoy using the variety of styles as a jumping-off point for sharing some favorites from their own music libraries.

Not bad even for parents
Of all the Children's cds we have in the car - and we have a lot - the two Backyardigans cds and the Sesame Street ones are the least grating on me. And my preschooler knows the different styles of music thanks to the Backyardigans - we can be listening to any music - kids or adults - and she'll ask, "Mommy, is that a song like in the Race to the Tower of Power?" Yup, sure is.

Likeable
My 2 year old loves this CD. Whenever we get into the van she exclaims, "Hold on tight" (one of the tracks). This does gt annoying after awhile, but I'm thanking God she doesn't like Barney!

Well.....
From what I have seen so far from this show, these kids have an imagination that will make Seth McFarlene make a run for cover. Tiki Beach (Pretty good name, should be a song), Race to the Tower of Power and Stomp to It? These songs are not that bad and yes, this is coming from a 15 year old. Some of the songs make good guitar practice or dance practice without all the explicit lyrics. Conclusion: nice work, Nick Jr.
