Parents need to know that this CD could be rated "R" for "Redundant" -- also for some sexual content, drug references, and swearing.
Unwritten Law rocks hard in HERE'S TO MOURNING. Like the pun in this album's title, both lyrics and music are hit-you-over-the-head obvious and overdone. Free of cleverness or subtlety, Unwritten Law ends up sounding less like a major-label act and more like the Green Day wannabes at a high school talent show. Somehow these guys have managed to hang in there for over a decade, despite a pronounced lack of wit or vision. That's okay, but you've got to wonder if they realize how lucky they are to have come this far on so little merit.
The biggest problem with Here's to Mourning, aside from poor songwriting, is the high "let's take ourselves really seriously" pretentiousness factor. Then there's the confusing mish-mosh of musical styles and mediocre performances. Overproduced within an inch of its life, the CD has no real personality of its own.
Families can talk about whether they think this band deserves the success it has found -- and why or why not?
