What parents need to know

Parents need to know that if your kids watch Nick Jr. or Noggin at all, this band's music will be familiar to them. On this fifth volume, the Latin-influenced mix of songs will be easy to enjoy with your kiddos, and maybe you'll even pick up some Spanish along the way.

  • "Rayos Diferente" is a remake of the band's bicycle safety song, "Different Spokes for Different Folks," which teaches kids how to be safe while riding their bike.

What's the story?

On their latest collection of Caribbean-Latin-American songs, Hot Peas 'N Butter has re-recorded their most popular hits for fans to enjoy on one album, VOL. 5: BEST OF THE BOWL. Winners of the 2006 and 2008 "Parent's Choice Awards," Hot Peas 'N Butter, whose music is often featured on Nick Jr. and Noggin shows like "Jack's Big Music Show," has taken fan favorites such as "Somos Familia" and "Pollito/Chicken" and given them a fulller, fancier spin. This installment of Latin-American-Caribbean-folk-rock music for kids is fun and inspires families to get on their feet.

Is it any good?

Considering these guys are on Volume 5 of their collection of children's music, it's pretty clear that they're popular and have found a winning formula. On their latest, Best of the Bowl, you can teach your kids a little Spanish, inform them about bicycle safety, help them learn their body parts, and encourage them to get on their feet and shake it to a funky salsa beat. On these 11 tracks, HPNB showcases their unique way of incorporating an array of musical influences, from Latin-American to Afro-Caribbean to folk and rock. Some of the songs are in Spanish and some are in English, and some use a little of both. Whether or not your kids like peas, or butter for that matter, they will definitely get a kick out of the songs on Best of the Bowl, and chances are, you will, too.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about what makes this album unique. It exposes young kids to multicultural music and different languages. How can families encourage their kids to embrace diversity and avoid the dilemma of stereotypes?

  • The song "Somos Familia" talks about family. What are some ways that families can enjoy media together?

  • This CD introduces young kids to different cultures and music. Do you think there's enough exposure about other cultures in the media? For young kids? Teenagers? Adults? Should there be more?
