What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this song is from the popular boy band from the Nickelodeon TV show of the same name. The song is positive and inspiring, telling "all the geeks, freaks, and wannabes....be who you are, love is all you need." It's clean and appropriate for any age, with the added bonus of having a great message about enjoying life and living it to the fullest.

What's the story?

Nickelodeon's fab foursome, Big Time Rush, gives a shout-out to anyone who feels left out or needs a little pep talk with "IF I RULED THE WORLD." The single premiered on their self-titled TV show in the episode "Big Time Single," when one of the boys, Kendall, suddenly finds himself single after his girlfriend moves to New Zealand. Musician Iyaz is featured in the song as well.

Is it any good?

Big Time Rush is already a big-time name (well, if you ask your tween daughter) but even kids who aren't fans of the show will relate to the track's simple but positive message of being yourself and accepting who you are. The wholesome quartet sings, "get up, up out of your seats, be who you are, love is all you need." BTR may not rule the world yet, but to their legions of screaming fans, they're getting pretty close. Your young tweens could certainly do worse than this sweet song.

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about TV show characters having music careers, and vice versa. Does this affect whether or not you buy music or watch a TV show?

  • Do you think musicians who are charismatic get a TV show, or if you have a TV show you automatically get to try your hand at music?

  • This song speaks to all the "geeks, freaks, and wannabes." Do you feel like you sometimes fit into one of these categories? How does this song make you feel?
