Infinity on High (by Fall Out Boy, Alternative Rock)

common sense media says

Harmless music that most kids have on their iPod.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this alt rock album contains some mild sexual references such as "conjugal visits" and "one-night stand." There's also some very soft profanity ("goddamed" and "hell") as well as a couple of references to taking pills and passing out.

Positive messages: Broad themes center on coping with love and lost love, but there's also some self-deprecating insight into living in the limelight ("I'm boring but I overcompensate with headlines and flash photography").
Violence: Metaphoric references to weapons and arms. Mention of "death in a double bed."
Sex: Some sexual innuendo ("getting you out of clothes, if I woke up next to you") but nothing overtly explicit.
Language: Repetitive use of "goddamned" in one song. One mention of hell in another.
Consumerism: Not applicable.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: References to taking pills (Blood cells pixelate/and eyes dilate/and the full moon pills got me out on the street at night) and one mention of being "passed out."

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
Families can talk about the pros and cons of fame and success -- a recurring theme throughout the album. Would you be grateful or resentful of the positive and negative attention that goes hand-in-hand with becoming a sudden celebrity? How can you hold on to some sort of normalcy when you're famous? Families can also discuss how this band plays with language to create interesting and clever song titles such as "The Carpal Tunnel of Love" and "Bang the Doldrums."

What's the story?

What's the story?
Fall Out Boy has gleaned the best from their pop-punk roots and emo influences to become more of a traditional rock band. Since their last album, much of the focus has been on bassist Pete Wentz, whose celebrity has often eclipsed the band's accomplishments. INFINITY ON HIGH, however, shines the spotlight back on Fall Out Boy's music -- a pleasing mix of pop, punk, and even a bit of hip-hop (Jay-Z makes an appearance on "Thriller"). Coming to grips with both fame and notoriety, the band's lyrics repeatedly expose their take-it-or-leave-it attitude. In "Thriller," they fix their attention on their faithful fans: "Crowds are won and lost and won again/but our hearts beat for the diehards."

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Full of lush melodies, danceable drum tracks, and catchy choruses, Infinity on High shows off lead singer Patrick Stump's strong and soulful vocals; while the band's sound continues to get bigger and bolder. The band often says more in a title than some bands say in entire songs ("I've Got All This Ringing in My Ears and None on My Fingers," for example). The lyrics don't quite live up to the cleverness of their titles, but they cover some sweeping themes, such as love, loneliness, and goodbyes, with intelligence and solid beats.

One of the only modern bands I like.
I'm a classic rock fan myself (The Beatles and Styx are my two favorite bands), but this band is my third favorite! They are completely different and original. The song This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race repeats the phrase: 'This ain't a scene It's a godd*mn arms race' And the song Hum Halleluia has the lines 'My words are my faith to h*ll with our good name' and 'Hired a construction crew 'cause it's h*ll on the engine' Another song, Bang the Doldrums I think, says 'This city says come h*ll or high water well I'm feeling hot and wet' That's three uses of h*ll, not one as the review says! Also at some points the lyrics make no sense, except in poetic sense such as Golden's 'Tongues on the sockets of electric dreams where the sewage of youth drowns the spark of my teens' And the song Carpal Tunnel of Love has many, including, but not limited too: 'Stomp out this disaster town' 'We keep the beat with your blistered feet and we bullet the words at the mocking birds singing slept through the weekend and dreamed of sinkin' with the melody of the cliffs of eternity got post cards from my former selves saying how you been? And we might have started saying goodbye just a little soon we're throwing stones at a glass moon Whoah we're so miserable and stunning Whoah love songs for the geniunely cunning' 'It was all ice cream headaches and sweet avalanche but we're the pearls and our shells got up to dance' 'Yawns for fawns on hunters lawns we're the has beens of husbands sharpening the knives of young wives take two years off and call me when your better take tears of mine and find yourself wetter' The song Golden is actually a piano ballad and The(After)Life of the Party has a calm feel. My favorite is Don't You Know Who I Think I Am? 'A penny for your thoughts but a dollar for your insides and a fortune for your disaster I'm just a painter and I'm drawing a blank We only want to sing you to sleep in your bedroom speakers whoah get me just right They say quitters never win but we walk the plank on a sinking ship there's a world out side of my front door that gets off on being down I could learn to pity fools as I'm the worst of all and I can't stop feeling sorry for myself whoah We only want to sing you to sleep in your bedroom speakers whoah get us right They say quitters never win but we walk the plank on a sinking ship there's a world outside of my front door that gets off on being down They say quitters never win but we walk the plank on a sinking ship there's a world outside of my front door that gets off on being down They say quitters never win but we walk the plank and we walk the plank ...' Or something like that. That's almost the end but I'm tired of typing. I hope this review helped!

Best for Kids!
My daughter loves this rock band. It is perfect for children especially their age. I see no harm in their music whatsoever.

kinda cool album
infinidy on high is NOT as good as from under the cork tree and most songs are not as catchy. The titles are very interesting as well as some of the lyrics, ha

Teen Friendly
Infinity on High is very acceptable for a teenager. Fall Out Boy is a very respectable band actually, especially compared to others. This might be because they are pop-punk so it isn't as "hardcore" as other bands of similar style that teens listen to. The language is clean for the most part, with a few not-too-bad cuss words like "hell" appearing barely at all. They stick to more thought-provoking lyrics to get a point across instead of foul language.

An OK Cd
This cd is ok . . i dont like how it says GD or has Lyrics about God thats my only problem . . Fall out boy are an okish band

I'm sorry to say, but the albums have slowly decreased since "Evening"
I bought the album at Target the day it came out and listened through it twice. It was pretty good. After many many more listens through, I liked it much more, but it still was missing just a slight something that kept it from being as good as their previous three CDs. FOB has completely abandoned their instrumental variety and skills that were on "Evening Out With Your Girlfriend", and they lost the somewhat punk roots from "Take This to Your Grave." Their third CD which was the one to push them into mainstreamity, still at least was pop-punk without too much pop in that mix. However, with "Infinity On High", FOB has become basically pop-rock and embraced mainstream. And I HAVE to say, anyone who thinks that they were ever real punk or emo, please, go learn how wrong those statements are. They were POP-punk, and there was never any emo songs, just angst in the lyircs. If angst made songs emo, then even people like Beyonce could be called emo for some songs. If you want good punk, I agree with the person below, Anti-Flag is a very good band, as are Dropkick Murphys (though with an Irish twist). Emo bands would be more like Hawthorne Heights and the last few AFI CDs. But for a poppier outlook on rock, without being just revoltingly mainstream and pop like All-American Rejects, than "Infinity On High" is still a very good album, I am just sorry to say not quite as good as their previous three.

No one should have to listen to this
I'll admit it, Fall Out Boy has become quite a popular band with the masses. So, I went to give the CD a try. The only problem is, I had to stop each song after listening to the vocals for at least fourty seconds. Each song is fully of scratchy voices and uncanny pop punk puke style instruments. Honestly, no one should be forceto like this. Fall Out Boy is very much like a plague. It only effects you if you aren't innoculated with a taste for music

Good Stuff
I'm 14 and i think that Fall Out Boy is a awsome band i also think that the languge is not a problem

Great album for anyone who likes good music
@Cjbear_10: the lyrics in those songs do make sense they are just metaphorical. Anyway I will let you know right now that I love fall out boy. It's got Some of the best lyrics I have ever heard with great pop punk music to back it up. Violence: One line is "death on in a double bed" and there are alot of references to weapons, especially on This Ain't A Scene It's An Arms Race", although the references are metaphorical. Sex: Thnks Fr Th Mmrs (one of my least favorites) talks about getting someone out of their clothes (wink, wink) but nothing really explicit or graphic (kids have probably heard far worse at school). Language: There are some uses of "h*ll" and the word "God-damned" is used an estimated 12 times but it is used correctly (literaly meaning condemned by God instead of just an interjection) although kids still shouldn't be saying it. Drugs/Alcohol: Talks about taking pills and the effects of doing so. Overall I still think it is an AWESOME album. PG for Some Language.

definitely recommended
This album is more poppy than previous Fall Out Boy albums, but still just as great. Watch out for The Carpal Tunnel of Love's music video, it shows cute cartoon animals dieing in various gory ways.( It's still pretty good.) Some great lines from the album: bandwagon's full, please catch another- this ain't a scene It's an arms race; sometimes we take chances, sommtimes we take pills-hum hallelujah; I'm just a painter and I'm drawing a blank- Don't You Know Who I Think I Am?
