Why We Rated This on for Ages 9 and Up

The good stuff

  • Messages:

There are some lines that are a bit self-absorbed, like "I’m the light of the world" but overall the message is benign.
  • Role models:

Jackson is an embattled role model whose talent and fame always seemed to come at the expense of his grasp on reality.

What to watch out for

  • Violence:

    Not an issue.
  • Sex:

The word "lover" is sung several times.
  • Language:

    Not an issue.
  • Consumerism:

    Not an issue.
  • Drinking, drugs, & smoking:

    Not an issue.

What Parents Need to Know

About "This Is It" (CD single)

Parents need to know that while Michael Jackson's first posthumously released single doesn't rise to offer any profound advice or moral platitiudes, like some of his previous hits, it does give kids a new glimpse at this famous and fallen pop star. The song is heavy on the "love" theme and Jackson sings about being someone's "lover" several times, but things don't get any more explicit than that.
