What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this soundtrack features songs from the popular Disney Junior show of the same name, with lots of pirate talk like "Hoist the sails!" and "Shiver me timbers!" There's nothing necessarily educational here, but fans of the show (and parents) will love the "pirate-y" rock tunes and extensive lesson in pirate vocabulary that's perfectly appropriate and fun for your young mateys.

  • Meant to entertain rather than educate, but it may encourage kids to use their imagination.
  • "Castaway on Pirate Island" talks about being with friends and enjoying "sunny days" -- even if you're a castaway on an island.
  • Shows the positive side of pirate life: Pirates like to rock and talk funny.
  • Getting ready to sail away, a character says, "I've got my sword!"

What's the story?

Disney Junior's first show after the switch from Playhouse Disney, Jake and the Never Land Pirates is basically a preschool version of Peter Pan. Now kiddie pirates can enjoy the music from the popular animated show on the JAKE AND THE NEVER LAND PIRATES SOUNDTRACK. The 18-track CD features music from the show, a lesson in all things pirate, and printable activities and games you can access on your computer.

Is it any good?

This soundtrack will have little pirates singing and shouting, "Swim away!", "Swab the deck!", and "Arrrr, matey!" With the popularity of pirates these days, the music on the Jake and the Never Land Pirates Soundtrack will satisfy the pirate in any family, big or small. Much of it sounds like a mix between The Wiggles, Imagination Movers, and the Talking Heads -- all in a good way. Every track is fun and catchy, but fans will especially love "Castaway on Pirate Island," "Aw, Coconuts," and the "Shipwreck Shuffle." The whole album is great for a pirate-themed party, Halloween, or even if you're just in the mood for some pirate fun. Yo ho!

What families can talk about

  • Families can talk about the popularity of pirate shows. Can you think of another really popular pirate movie that probably influenced the creation of this one? Do you like Jake and the Never Land Pirates because of the stories, the music, or just the fact that it's about pirates?

  • The lyrics use lots of pirate jargon, and the music evokes pirate life. Do you like the music? What makes it fit the sound of pirates? Is it the words, the instruments, or both? If the music was really pretty and soft, would it still sound like pirate music?
