"Jar of Hearts" (CD single) (by Christina Perri, Rock)

common sense media says

Bleak but clean song from So You Think You Can Dance.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that this single is a tame song, including no offensive language or mentions of sex, substance use, or violence. It does reference kissing in one line and has a somewhat bleak theme about broken relationships, but overall, the tune is an OK choice for older kids.

Positive messages: By talking about not giving in when a former flame wants to get back together, this tune puts out a positive message for young adults who are just beginning to experience their own romantic relationships.
Positive role models: Christina Perri has just barely hit the scene, so it's hard to tell what kind of role model she'll be; that said, she's been working hard to make it in the music business while holding down her day job -- demonstrating a good work ethic.
Violence: Not applicable.
Sex: One mention of kissing.
Language: Not applicable.
Consumerism: Not applicable.
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not applicable.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids
  • Families can talk about how to stay strong in the face of failed relationships. Why do some people want to get back together with a former partner who has treated them badly?
  • What are the five most important qualities to look for in choosing someone to start a romantic relationship with?

What's the story?

What's the story?
"JAR OF HEARTS" is the first single from newcomer Christina Perri that shot to fame after first being heard on the hit TV show So You Think You Can Dance? In this rock-oriented tune, Perri sings her heart out about shunning the continued advances of a former flame who didn't treat her well while they were together, yet now wants to rekindle their failed romance. Despite the track's bleak theme, the song actually has a positive message about respecting yourself and not settling for less, which Perri relays without using profanities or graphic adult content. With that in mind, parents should feel OK about buying this tune for older kids.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

Christina Perri may be new to the music scene, but she proves in this single that she can hang with the big girls. Her vocals are better than her slightly younger peers like Selena Gomez, and they give more established talents like Hayley Williams from Paramore a run for their money. Coupled with the track's slow, haunting arrangement, it's easy to see how the song has gained instant popularity.

Beautiful song!
I came across this song purely by chance, and now I'm very glad that I did. This song made me cry when I first heard it; it was so beautiful. The lyrics were moving, and I fell in love with it almost instantly. People: by this song so she can get a record label for herself and come out with an album!

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE IT!
Awesome! I love this song, and I can relate to it. Perri talks about not giving in to an ex when they are trying to get back together after a hard breakup, and being stronger.

It's okay.
It's very hard to hear what Chritina Perri is saying in this song, and I don't think it's very beautiful like one of my friends said. But it's alright. Nothing innapropiate.

Amazing song about a serial heartbreaker, great for tweens
Let me start off by saying that Christina Perri is a great role model for young girl who want to one day make it big. At first she started out as a girl working as a waitress and one of her friends was on SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE and he played on the show. Now for the review. Great song, I'm not a fan of songs like this usually but I love this sone

Magnificent.
This is a beautiful song that started Christina's music career very swiftly. There's no sexual references, violence, swearing, or any of that in this song, which I appreciate. It's okay for ages seven and up.

Boring
This song is appropriate for everyone, and a pretty song. I just don't get a feeling when I listen to it. I don't really like it, it's just boring.
