Parents need to know that this CD offers cheerful, family-friendly fun in a musical-comedy style. These not-so-subtle positive message songs for very young kids will be most appealing to those familiar with the Disney Channel Playhouse series.
In Grotto's Grove, the alternate universe inhabited by Johnny and the Sprites on the popular Disney Channel Playhouse TV show, there's this human (Johnny, played by Tony-award-nominated Broadway performer John Tartaglia), a bunch of cute furry little puppet creatures (the Sprites) and -- apparently -- a group of highly skilled members of Local 802 hiding in the shrubbery. Together they whip up 19 frothy musical confections with hit-you-over-the-head positive messages for young kids.
Though subtlety isn't part of the cultural palette in Grotto's Grove, the songs are well-performed and produced with Disney's usual high standards. Johnny is an expressive and cheerful leading man who gives his emotive all on songs like "There's Nobody Quite Like You" and "So Many Ways to Say Hello" (featuring "hello" in several languages), and Natalie Venetia Belcon (as "Gwen") adds sass and soul. Fans of the popular Disney Channel series will no doubt enjoy singing along.
Families can talk about "The Right Size" and "That's What Friends Do." Do you ever feel like you're too small (or too big) to do something you want to do, or to be taken seriously. You can also talk about what you need from your friends, and how you can be a better friend to them.
