Parents need to know that this CD features the lighter side of Johnny Cash, and that content-wise there's nothing to fear. It's a good introduction to the genre of country mountain music and simple storytelling for young ears.
Since the late, great Johnny Cash's darker side was recently displayed for all of the world to see in a feature motion picture, it's fitting that we return to the man's music to recall his true contributions to American music. The opening song on THE JOHNNY CASH CHILDREN'S ALBUM, "Nasty Dan," sets the tone perfectly, combining Cash's deep voice with a fanciful description of the naughty Dan that will certainly hook boys of any age. Then there's the classic Cash-style songs like "The Timber Man" and "Grandfather's Clock" that could never be done better by anyone. The lightest moment comes with "Ah Bos Cee Dah," a previously unreleased track featuring Johnny's made-up alphabet. This is a funny one that the kids might enjoy listening to and learning themselves.
It turns out that Johnny Cash had a lighter, childlike side that is amply displayed on this CD alongside his more popular "tell it like it is" tunes. There's plenty to like on this CD, mostly in the second half when one feels the glow of Johnny Cash's warm voice speaking directly to the listener as if he were still here to share his songs around the fire.
Families can talk about Johnny's unique style: his bass vocal range, his eclectic song choices, and the way his simple, unadorned arrangements help him deliver all of his songs almost as if he were telling us stories in our living room.
