Parents need to know that the most objectionable thing about this soundtrack is lackluster songwriting. Even if you love the movie, you can go ahead and skip this soundtrack.
The Disney Channel movie Jump In! tells the story of the clash between meeting family expectations and following your heart. Izzy, a kid who's being groomed to be a prize fighter, abandons this pursuit (breaking his old man's heart) to join a double-dutch jump-rope team competition. Corbin Bleu (of High School Musical fame) as Izzy does a terrific job on "Push It to the Limit," one of the best songs. Unfortunately, few of the other tracks of JUMP IN! come close in terms of performance or songwriting.
Overall the CD is a clunker, with 98 percent of the energy provided by two or three songs. It's not that there's anything exactly wrong with these songs. They're just derivative, unimaginative, and boring; far below Disney's usual standards. The writing is so predictable that you can make a family game out of "guess the next line's rhyme" on many of the tunes. Even most of the vocalists sound bored. Though the message of the film might be a terrific one, families will do best to watch the movie and skip the soundtrack.
Families can talk about the concept of "filler" -- there are a couple of great songs on this CD, but most are pretty lame. What songs do you like and why? What are the boring songs missing? You can also put on the CD and bring out a jump rope and try your own moves -- that might make the tunes a bit more interesting.
