What parents need to know
Parents need to know that they can feel good about purchasing this enjoyable album, and not just for its fantastic music. Part of the proceeds from sales in Canada go to The Sarah McLachlan Music Outreach, which "offers free music education to inner-city youth in Vancouver." A portion of U.S. sales goes to VH1 Save the Music, "dedicated to improving the quality of education in America's public schools by restoring music programs in cities across the country."
What's the story?
FOR THE KIDS aims to please and hits the bull's-eye, from the bright crayon included in the CD case of the first 25,000 copies sold (for coloring the poster on the reverse of the liner notes), to the toe-tapping updates of children's favorites mixed with new compositions. Cake starts the fun with an uptempo "Mahna Mahna," and Barenaked Ladies keeps it going with gentle teasing in "La La La La Lemon," made popular a generation ago by Bert and Ernie on Sesame Street. Guster proclaims "I've Got To Be Clean," and Sarah McLachlan sings "The Rainbow Connection" as though she means every word.
Is it any good?
Old and new, invigorating and calming -- this CD delivers it all. For example, John Ondrasik's "The Hoppity Song" will rev up the kids, and Sixpence None the Richer will take them calmly back down to earth with the sweet "Goodnight Children Everywhere." And as the kids enjoy the fun of this music, they won't be alone: Parents will smile, rather than wince, each time this album goes back into the CD player.
