Parents need to know that most of the tracks are squeaky clean, but the opening and closing songs contain some sexual innuendo.
If anyone doubts the gifts of the kids featured on AMERICAN JUNIORS, this album convincingly presents their talents full strength.
Morgan Burke belts out "Build Me Up Buttercup" like a veteran, Chauncey Matthews is sweetly tremulous in "A Whole New World," and A.J. Melendez displays impressive range and expression in "I'll Be There."
But the album could have chosen its lead and closing tracks with more sensitivity. For example, in this clean-as-a-whistle album, it grates to hear the finalists join voices in "One Step Closer," singing, "Hold on! Hold on! Hold on to my lovin'!/ I've been savin' every little bit of my love for you/ I've been dreamin' just to get by/ It's so exciting, fantasizin'." And why close the album with "Kids In America," when it has lyrics like, "Kind hearts don't make a new story./ Kind hearts don't grab any glory./ …Come closer, honey that's better./ Got to get a brand new experience./ Feeling right. Oh don't try to stop baby. Hold me tight."
Families can talk about the prospects for these young singers. What do you think lies ahead for them? Will they achieve stardom, or go back to their homework, sports teams, and friends? What does it mean to be an "American Idol"?
