Parents need to know that this album might not be what tween Miley Cyrus fans are expecting, but it's still a safe collection of mellow love songs. There are no dance tracks or bubblegum pop sounds here, which is a big departure for a Miley project. That said, parents don't need to worry; even though the tracks are pretty much all about love in some shape or form, there's little sexuality to speak of.
Miley Cyrus's new movie is a departure from her Hannah Montana days, and in the same way the soundtrack to THE LAST SONG is also a musical step away from her tween pop roots. There are actually only two tracks out of 16 that feature Cyrus' vocals. The rest of the album is dedicated to singer-songwriters and folksy ballads and love songs. Without a doubt, this album isn't a dance party or platform for the Hannah Montana franchise.
Surprise! Although Miley's acting skills might have taken a hit from many critics with her dramatic debut, the soundtrack to the film is actually quite good. It's just not what you'd expect from a Cyrus production, and that's what's so appealing. Many of the tracks have a folksy feel that hearken back to the singer-songwriter movement of the '70s. The theme of love is handled quite well, with little sentimentality or pop sweetness. Look for harmonious gems from Maroon 5, Edwin McCain, and Iron and Wine.
Families can talk about albums that aren't what you expected. This album isn't the typical Miley Cyrus pop album. How do you find out what content an album has on it? Do you rely on the reputation of the artist, or do you and your family judge every album separately?
What do you think of Disney using popular compilation albums like this as a launching pad for new acts? Do you think this is a clever marketing technique that helps discover new bands, or just a commercial move?
