What parents need to know

Parents need to know that the musicians and singers on this CD bring you an infectious collection of family-friendly party songs, all in French, with delightful accompaniment that makes heavy use of the banjo, harmonica, and guitar. The songs aren't all that educational -- although one does involve counting -- and they do overflow with a quirky sense of fun. The CD includes a file for printing out the French lyrics and translations.

  • "Sautons sur le Carreau" teaches kids to count, but most of the songs aren't educational at all -- they're just fun, quirky stories.
  • Not applicable.
  • The English translations have some innuendo, but it's playful, innocent, and funny: "Tail to tail and nose to nose/Oh, they love to hold each other close," "He lost his lover/He got put out to pasture/By someone who is not as smart but better looking!," and "He thinks she has/nice wool curls/She loves his cute little hoofs/And without further ado they get married/in the farmyard, it's madness/And soon arrive/precious little lambs."

What's the story?

Fresh and sassy, these 10 folksy songs -- recorded in the Acadian style (also known as Cajun) by a group of French Canadian musicians -- provide a delightful French connection for everyone in the family, especially those who are studying French in school. Clean, deceptively simple musical arrangements make heavy use of banjo, accordion, harmonica, fiddle, foot-tapping rhythm, and a nonstop sense of fun.

Is it any good?

Little kids will love the party shouts, train sounds, animal noises, and a ticktock rhythm that gets faster and faster on "Sautons sur le Carreau." Parents will get a kick out of the sexy Edith Piaf-style delivery and gypsy violins on "Au Bol des Alligators," and older siblings will enjoy picking out familiar words and phrases. Although the CD includes a file for printing out the French lyrics and translations, some of the songs lose their charm when read in English, so it's best to just enjoy what you hear on the CD. Either way, most families are bound to appreciate the energy and skill with which this lovely collection was assembled, whether or not they understand every word.
