common sense media says

This will be a must-have for diehard fans.

parents & educators say

What parents need to know

Parents need to know that unlike the movie, the soundtrack has no frightening images to worry about. It's mostly well-composed, well-performed orchestral music.

Positive messages: Once again, the soundtrack is far more benign than the movie.
Violence: The soundtrack is not at all violent. The movie is a whole other story.
Sex: There are hardly any lyrics to worry about.
Language: Not an issue at all.
Consumerism: It doesn't get more commercial than this--big movie, big tie-in, two editions and four CD covers to choose from, built-in web link, just try NOT to buy this CD!
Drinking, drugs, & smoking: Not an issue here.

What to talk about

Talk to your kids

Families can talk about how the music soundtrack helps set the mood and enhance the magic of the movie.

What's the story?

What's the story?

If it takes nothing short of a phenomenally super-hyped blockbuster fantasy trilogy to get your kids interested in orchestral music, so what? The soundtrack of THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING -- number three in the Lord of the Rings trilogy -- evokes drama and passion through its intensely arranged musical instruments and choral vocals, and they are mostly wonderful (though some may consider it just a teensy bit tedious without the visuals). Annie Lennox closes the show nicely with an understated Celtic-style ballad. But mostly there are few lyrics to worry about, so this soundtrack is appropriate for kids of any age, although older kids are most likely to appreciate it.

Is it any good?

Is it any good?

The music on this soundtrack is beautiful, tasteful, and gracefully performed. It's also moody and magical, so will evoke remembered images and favorite passages. Perhaps children too young to see the PG-13-rated movie (which is quite long and far more violent than the music) will be able to make up their own stories to this soundtrack, or simply enjoy it on its own. The soundtrack will definitely be a hit with the true-blue diehard fans.

Great soundtrack!
If you love the movies, (and maybe even if you don't) you'll love this!

seriously, who rates this as 11 and up?
it appears there are Trolls on this site, cause this CD is 95% instrumental with 1 track being a song from the film that some of the actors sing! its not even in english!

My favorite soundtrack!
Ok, scratch that my second. Two Towers is my favorite soundtrack but still. Howard Shore is amazingly awesome! (second) best soundtrack ever!!!

Excellent!!!
This soundtrack is absolutely beautiful. Howard Shore really captures the emotion of the film. A must for any Lord of the Rings fan!!

beautiful...
This soundtrack is AMAZING! Howard Shore did a wonderful job, as well as the other writers/vocals! I listen to it all the time, and I still can't get over the masterful job done! My favorite tracks would have to be...all of them! I really can't decide...though the most outstanding are tracks 5, 16, 17, 18, and 19. Amazing. I highly recommend it for anyone!
